A discussion about the power relations of teachers and students

In the traditional classroom, where the teacher has the authority of the role – arbiter (Jones, 1999) and this significant role is slowly changing to have less power as a result of the diminishing role as the authoritarian. Schwier & Daniel (2008) suggested that the leader will need to pay attention to five areas – Historicity – “pay attention to individual within communities for their contribution” ; Identity- “review the focus periodically or shaping the purpose, outline the requirements” ; Mutuality – “facilitate decision making without taking over”; Autonomy – “ Foster an environment for individuals for expressing and commenting” ; Watch for engagement , sometimes the lack of or over abundances which may affect other participants. Hodgson et al (2012) examine the new roles associated with networked learning teacher based on the new values and beliefs concerning the change in practice for teachers; and outlined three roles – as an academic instructors, as a process-orientated supervisor and as a social mediator.

In an official university blog posted at the University of British Columbia’s website, an instructor of the Sauder School of Business – Mr. Paul Cubbon and Mr. Mark Yeldin – an associate professor in the School of Electrical Engineering both reported that they tried the flipped classroom concept with students using their mobile devices to watch lecture videos produced for their student, using a combination of video content, social network technologies such as PulsePress (similar to Twitter). Cubbon believes the need for the instructor to design a course and carefully burying the learning activity (UBC, 2103) in the content is important. Cubbon puts forward the view that the new pedagogical approach requires a different focus from teachers which suggests the role of the instructor is changing. Yeldin noted ;-

“The concept of content delivery via mobile phone is not trivial, Yedlin argues. However, being able to download course videos onto mobile phones makes content more accessible. Having the option to view videos of their class lectures on the bus, for example, allows students to make better use of their time. Mobile phones have a strong connection to social media culture, which is “the lingua franca of students,” (UBC, p.1)

This is just one example of the change in teaching practice that is becoming a phenomena itself as a result of mobile learning technologies are used by students and teachers – which brought along changes in their roles. One may question whether the teachers have been preparing themselves well, acquiring new competence, technical skills and knowledge to adapt to these growing responsibilities.
